Thank you for your interest in our school. Howden Junior School
is committed to excellence, the setting of high expectations and
continuous improvement. We work towards the Every Child Matters
agenda at all times:- Be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve,
make a positive contribution and achieve economic well-being. We
aim to provide a secure and happy environment within which your
child will be provided with stimulating and appropriate learning
opportunities through a broad, balanced and carefully planned curriculum.
We are a school where everyone is valued as an individual and
our children are encouraged to develop a sense of self-respect
and respect for others. There is an excellent team spirit amongst
our staff, who are dedicated to providing the best education possible.
The staff will provide our children with examples and opportunities
to help them develop sensitivity, tolerance and empathy towards
each other, respect for their environment and responsibility for
their own behaviour.
We encourage strong home links based on honesty, understanding
and trust, helping children achieve their full potential. Our school
actively reaches into the community in order to promote strong
collaborative relationships within Howden and the local villages.
Close links exist with Howden Infant School and the Senior School
to ensure continuity and progression between the different phases
of education.
During the past year the whole school has been working hard to
gain the Healthy Schools Award. We were assessed early in June
last year and are delighted that we have achieved the award. As
part of this we have improved our school meals. The School’s
Food Council chooses one hot meal and a salad is provided each
day with a choice of 6 vegetables / fruit. The children choose
their meal at morning registration which means that there is very
little waste food. We now have two sittings, which allows the children
to play for the maximum amount of time over their lunch break.
Playground equipment has been provided for the children with zoned
areas for safe play. We have also achieved the Travel Plan this
year, which has allowed us to buy a cycle shelter for those children
who are allowed to cycle to school.
We have been working hard to include a ‘quiet area’ for
the children to sit and talk to their friends. This includes a
vegetable plot where the gardening club children have successfully
grown many varieties of vegetable.
Howden Junior School aims to provide an enjoyable, friendly environment
so that all of the boys and girls are happy to come to school,
bubbling with enthusiasm and eager to learn. I am confident that
we – parents, staff, governors and children – will
continue to work closely together to achieve further success.
